"You told him what?" Buffy asked. She was in disbeliefwith what her mother just said.

"I told him if he loved you enough he would leave."Joyce turned to face her daughter she knewshe was doing the right thing someday Buffy wouldthank her for it.

"What gives you the right...t-to tell him to leaveme."

"He was hurting you."

Buffy eyes welled up in tears she couldn't believewhat her mother was saying. He neverphysically hurt her. That didn't matter. Everythinghad been going so well for them, until he upand left. All this time Buffy was thinking it was herfault.

"He wasn't hurting me, we were happy. I was happy. Heis the only man I ever loved."

"Hunny, he's dead."

"Yes, mom I know, all vampires are. But he wasdifferent he had a soul. I loved him." Buffy bentdown to touch the ground before her. She glancedaround at the trees. "We used to come to thiscemetery, weird yes but it was home to us."

"Buffy I understand your life is different but whycan't you have a normal boyfriend."

Buffy stood up. "And run the chance of getting themkilled. 'Hey it was a great movie I would gofor coffee but I have to go and kill me some undeadAmericans.' Yeah mom, that relationshipwould last a Hell of a long time."

"Don't talk that way to me."

"IN what way, I'm not supposed to be upset? I'm notsupposed to mourn? Why don't I just die,then you won't have to worry."

"I don't want you to die."

"Yeah well maybe I do. Does anyone care about what Iwant? Huh? What about Buffy? I am theone living this life not you. Mom, look around at mylife? One day I am going to die becausesome vamp will be too strong or some unknown demonwill rise."

"Then quit."

"I can't and don't change the subject. By telling himto leave you killed him, and you killed me.Just go."

"But Buffy."

"LEAVE ME ALONE!"Joyce looked at her daughter. Without arguing sheturned and left. She knew she had screwedup, and no apology would suffice. You killed him andyou killed me.

After seeing her mother was gone she fell back down tothe ground. She let her tears escape hereyes and fall to the pile of ash below. When the tearshit some of the ash rose and touchedBuffy's face. "Angel..." Buffy whispered.She was so up in her thoughts she never saw the vampcome up behind her.

Buffy Summers never knew what 'bit' her.
